in riley's words.

here is riley. September 25. 2009. note her very awesome outfit. she was supposed to be sleeping/napping but i walked in and she had gotten into all the clothes. what a mess. but she did mention it matches. each piece she had on all had green in it. lol.
there are good days and bad days for riley. days she never seems to stop chattering and days she hardly says a word....
today. she chattered up a storm. here is a video of riley telling eric about the day.
maybe it will give you a little bit of a glimpse of a good day. a day it seems 'easy' to understand what she is saying. and by saying easy, i mean, not clearly spoken but as her mom and dad we know what she is saying.

sorry that some of the video was shortened due to the file size being to large for blogger upload, and youtube upload tools... but what is captured in this portion gives you the gist...
thanks for watching!

raw thoughts from a mother

i love this picture because she is happy. truly happy in this moment. and i was fortunate to have captured it.

i am going to write first by saying, these are merely raw emotions and thoughts that i am having. i have made the decision, when this blog started that we would be open, honest and candid with our lives. this is one of those moments where i am going to allow you to peak into my heart, and in my mind, and there you will find a whole set of conflicting emotions.

i am so happy i am a mother. being a mother is one of the greatest joys in life and i don't say that to be cheesy or wordy, but seriously a joy of mine to have children. what people don't often tell you when they are a mother, is how hard and challenging it can be....

daily i am reminded of these challenges. and forgive me for saying, but, i feel greater challenges than most might experience but of course, less challenges that some moms experience.

having a special needs child has been one of those challenging aspects of my life. and in the life of our family. we have know since riley was 2 that we had a special needs child. wrapping my head around this was tough, i will admit, and just getting the lingo down in my mind was challenge #1 and accepting that life would not be 'normal' was the biggest challenge of them all.

i feel so blessed. i feel blessed in so many ways but in God's greater purpose i feel blessed to have a husband, who has a degree in special education. having him be knowledgeable in just the process of all of that has taken place has allowed me to have a sense of direction. i would be lost without his knowledge and help and feel honored to have him by my side helping me learn all there is to learn about my Riley and getting her needs met and diagnosed properly.

riley was diagnosed early on with speech delay. seems so vague. i know. but further into things, testing, etc. she was diagnosed with verbal apraxia. we were flooded with information and resources at that time.

{sorry if this is repetitive for some of you reading this, as we have mentioned it in past blogs etc or spoken to you about it}

at any rate, what we have not mentioned in posts since, is that there have been several new symptoms and/or problems with her development. (<---- note a developmental chart for birth on) at four years old: here is a chart of what she should be doing consistently and well.

Balances on one foot for 4 - 8 seconds

Jumps from step

Cuts straight with scissors

Copies a circle

Unbuttons large buttons

Winds up toy by turning knob

Cuts entire length of traced line within one-half inch of the line

Pulls on shorts

Draws a cross with intersecting lines

Begins to show a hand preference

Strings 4 to 5 beads

Copies the word "Stop"

Draws a person with at least 8 body parts

Copies a diamond

Imitates building steps with blocks

Asks question- "What, Where, Who?"

Speaks clearly and is understood by non-family members

Gives reasonable answers to basic questions

Says sounds of d, g, f, k, y

Dresses and undresses with little help

Gives first and last name

Counts to 5

Builds a tower of 10 blocks

Shows many emotions

Parallel play with other children

well there are sooooooooooo many areas she is lacking, just based on the chart. now of course, some kids will be further ahead than others, and some will be behind on other things.... but some of the particular things seem 'interesting' to us and the people profiling her today....

she is amazing with gross motor skills! she could climb the tallest mountain if we asked her to, she could climb trees if we let her or balance like no one i have seen.... but her FINE motor skills are really really lacking. she doesn't draw much at all- she has drawings that one would think a 'baby' drew, i.e. chicken scratches on paper... she also gets fixated on things. she was obsessed with 'cars' well we thought that was cute, so we flooded her with car after car because that's all she liked.... well at 4 you would hope to have more than that interesting her.... but since the age of 2 all we have been able to excite her playtime with is cars. now she moved on and is fixated on fishing. she will stand in the backyard and practice casting for hours and that's all she seems to get gitty over. she will do other things but she doesn't appear nearly as happy doing them and those things involve riding her bike, watching a show on tv.... things like that made the psychologist today very concerned. her ability to only fixate. and her fine motor skills lacking areas in which they should be stronger.

riley has a hard time with her speech. even after 2 years of speech therapy i, her mom, can't understand what she is trying to say most of the time and you would think being her mom, around her 24/7 could at least translate for her so we could get through conversations with others, but i hate to admit that i cannot translate most of the time.

now, to my raw emotions. all week long i have dreaded today, the day in which she would be tested in a thousand areas.
i feel so disorganized. not one bed is made in the house. there are dishes in the sink. laundry piled up. the house is a mess. but i honestly was overwhelmed emotionally that i couldn't function for the last 2 days. i was numb. at the meeting, i had page after page of things i needed to fill out or survey. it is soooo
hard filling out the questionnaires. hard because as your are checking the boxes for the things she does and doesn't do, it becomes quickly overwhelming.... my eyes began to swell, tears began to form in my eyes, as i am checking less and less of what she is doing developmentally. then i panic and get more worried.... it is more than speech. she needs more than speech therapy because why are these other areas lacking her development.

then i get overcome by the thoughts of " i need to do more to help her. " but then i feel i am doing all i know how to do, and doing what i ought to do.... and then i get stressed.

Tuesday riley will go in for further testing. today for 3 hours they tested language, motor skills, both fine and gross, the tested vision, hearing.... a ton of stuff.... then they tally her 'score card' and at the end the psychologist met with me and told me that she will need further testing on speech and language. she will also be further evaluated on fine motor and something else, which embarrassingly i have forgotten through the emotion of it all.

today's testing was a brief vag
ue testing regimen called 'dial 3' basically standing for "Developmental Indicators for the Assessment of Learning, Third Edition (DIAL-3). The DIAL-3 is designed to provide initial screening information about students’ skills. Hence, the
measure may be useful for identifying children who need more intensive diagnostic
assessment or who are at risk for developmental and school readiness problems. The
DIAL-3 measures preschoo
lers’ skills across three major areas: motor, concepts, and
language skills. Each of the three skil
l areas yields a sub scale score and those scores
can then be converted into percentile ranks.

then they take their scores from today and d
o further testing..... so Tuesday we will go to the next steps....

we will see what is in store for our riley. but for now, we will just wait. wait and pray. pray for peace. pray that she is the right program. it seems really encouraging in the sense that it is much more thorough here than what we experience in our school system or the regional center of orange county. seems like they have a lot of strengths to their program and a lot of people involved in the program because there is a big need here. i feel blessed to be in this new system. i feel intrigued and excited that we are on the right track in getting her placed. she was placed in California but we were very unhappy with her program in that particular school district so i am encouraged we are in a good place now. it just doesn't take away from the struggles there are in getting what your child needs. there are a sea of parents raising their hands high helping they'll come to their rescue and help them, and there are many parents that drown because they don't get the help they needed or deserve. its a fight. every day. you gotta holler. you have to make noise and stand up and fight for your child. so they in turn get what they need.
and our riley will get just that. i'll make sure of that, darn well. because i have an amazing, supportive loving husband, and a gracious, loving God that is going to guide me through helping the life of our riley.

now its time to get life in order. clean the house. and get life settled again. i just had such a hard week this week. the anxiety over it all. it is crippling. i will admit, it cripples me to the point that i put the milk away in the cupboad at realize, oh, that goes in the fridge. i can not even begin to describe what it is like. i have had many mothers with special needs children share similar stories. as a mom, you want everything to be right, and perfect, and as mothers we beat ourselves up too much. we are way to hard on ourselves. am i am learning grace. i am seeing the mercy God bestows upon me... and i am growing so much. riley is teaching me new strength.

dear riley rae,
i love you infinity.... as you would say,
i love you to china,
to california,
to honeysuckle beach
and back...
i am so proud of you. i know life is tough right now.
but, we will get you back in school soon. just a few more steps. but it is going to be great. just hang in there with me. we'll do this together.

love, mom.

back-to-school night

Caelan had back-to-school night last night.
we saw friends of hers. met par
nets. visited a bit. walked the school. and visited other classrooms doing different games and tasks each teacher provided. we love her school. it is amazing. a perfect fit! we just hope academically it pushes her a bit more than it has been. seems to be starting out a bit slow, but we will see how it progresses into the year. i am certain a lot of it is review to get into the routine again of school.

an analogy for an explanation

OK, bear with me while i give you a brief analogy. hopefully this analogy works as i will attempt to use it to describe my feelings today.

first i will start by saying, yes, moving to Idaho has brought on many pains and difficulties, but then it has also brought an overwhelming amount of blessings too, and it appears that their are subtle reminders of how great it is.

every day along the way, in this journey, something has happened that has made it
beautiful.

furthermore, like an advent calendar, you don't know what is behind the door, but there is a surprise waiting, a gift for the day....

today, apparently was trash day on our street- something we have been very confused on and haven't made the time to call and ask the exact pick up day for trash. since this has been the case, we have been going to the d
ump and taking the trash ourselves.

btw: going to the dump in Idaho is free! a beautiful thing since we used to spend a lot of money throwing trash away with the various projects we have gotten ourselves into.- so this is beautiful thing #1.....

beautiful thing #2 is the way people treat others. it seems like there is an overwhelming amount of graciousness upon people here. we have missed trash day for several weeks now, and the t
rash collector came to the door today.... beautiful thing #3.... he went on to say, "i haven't been picking up your trash and i wanted to see if maybe you forgot to put it out and to make sure i let you know that trash day is Thursdays.... "

wow! coming to the door, taking the time out of his schedule to make sure i didn't have trash he would want to dump for me....

now, on to beautiful thing #4 he saw we had big over sized trash bags on the side of the house with yard waste, i don't mean a few, i mean like 25 of them- our yard is HUGE and its the lawn clippings for 3 weeks..... well, on to the beautiful part..... he offered to take that ALL as well for me to save us the trips to the dump!
wow!

it never ceases to amaze me at the beauty and wonder that has come our way since moving here. we have been graced by warm people surrounding us in love and graciousness like we have never experienced.

one might say to argue,
"i am sure there are plenty of nice, gracious people in orange county as well, it isn't like you need to live in Idaho to receive such treatment...."

well, you are RIGHT....

but, the way i look at it, because we are allowing God to write our story, and we are following the plans He has laid out for us, which involves living here instead of orange county, i think that he allows these everyday reminders of the great place we live now....

....it gets me through.

it brings comfort to me to experience every day, His grace and mercy, and the amazing people He has brought our way to show us His love.
amazing. it is amazing here. amen.

shirley

my grandma had a sister Shirley, who lived in Michigan.

Shirley was a devoted lady. a loving lady. someone who cared a lot for others and expected little in return. she never missed an opportunity to send a card to wish you a birthday or a merry Christmas. she was faithful to family. loving.

....and she went to heaven this last week, and it is there, she will be reunited with her husband, Doug and my grandma Nancy, and the many others there that will grace her with their presence.

oh, to meet Jesus face to face. what a beautiful day.
____________________________
may God be with my uncle ed and my dad in their travels, as they are in michigan, (and have been there for quite a few days now, to be with family and to celebrate shirley's life.

  1. thankful that i am finally allowing Jesus to guide my steps and write my story.
  2. my loving and supportive husband. almost 9 years of marriage- and over 10 together, it has been an amazing ride with such an incredible man of God.
  3. my children. the joys they bring and the way God uses my children to stretch me and cause me to rely more on Him.
  4. our dog that brings so much love and comfort into our home.
  5. our families and the role that each one plays in our lives. for you never ending love and grace in our lives.
  6. our home and the new place we dwell.
  7. our church, the new and the old and all of the churches that have played a role in helping guide, form and shape our lives spiritually.
  8. friends, both new and ones that have stuck with us for years, months and days on end. where would we be without you!? your love, support, grace and mercy.
  9. the talents that God has blessed upon us. may we use our talents and treasures for His kingdom and to love and reach others.
  10. that we have days to sit and think of the many things that we are grateful for. the fact that there is so much to be grateful for, that it is impossible to create a complete list of our blessings.

God does so much and asks so little, and our lives are constantly being blessed. may you reach out to someone today, or tomorrow, or the next day, and bless them. imagine, if we all reached out just a little. i have made it my focus, and
in my family we have committed to reach others.

more conversations

caelan came home from school today and she mentioned a few kids kept calling her "kianna"

i said, why were they calling you kianna?

she said, "I'm not sure but they kept calling me that"

[a little background info is: last year kids always called her "caitlyn" and she allowed them to, she told me, "its OK" she even asked at one point if we would change her name to caitlyn.... needless to say, since these kids were calling her kianna, i was curious to see her response....]

she said, (with the serious of faces) "oh, i just told them, she's not here today."

i was laughing soooooooooooo hard. in fact i told my sister the story on the phone....

"she's not here today?" what sort of response is that???? guess she felt bad correcting them, or maybe it was cool to think that the others thought she was kianna..... i have no idea. but the point being, i love this age. every day there is a new conversation that brings a great deal of laughter and it is something that i just can't help but to share with the blog world because everyone needs laughter in their life! especially in these hard economic times etc.

a bedtime conversation with riley

it is bed time.... riley has had her bath, and is all dressed in her night gown ready for bed. she walks into the kitchen.... (wearing a sleeping beauty nightgown)

Riley: look, mom, i'm a beauty.

eric: you are a beauty.

me: you are a beauty, but you should be 'A sleeping beauty.' good night.

riley: nope, i'm cinderella.

me: oh, why are you cinderella. you look like sleeping beauty.

riley: cause, i'm not going to bed. (with the sweetest softest of voices)

-she sure knows how to work it. she has the wit unlike anyone out there. quick to think on her feet. she cracks us up all the time.
the teachers response to the turtle incident: ( a make you feel good response)

Thanks for the email! I had no idea Caelan thought the "turtle incident" was such a big deal. :) (She actually put it away as soon as I asked her to.) But I am really glad to hear that she is so honest with you, and that you have such clear and consistent boundaries with her. You can be proud that you've raised such a kind and honest girl!

I appreciate you keeping me informed!

not so good. with some good.

I was so disappointed. As a parent, we can expect that not all things go perfectly. No kid is perfect, no day is just right. and this week has been one struggle after another....

Caelan has struggled with talking in class.... a minor problem that i hope doesn't become a big one. the teacher emailed last night with a great report saying she seems to be settled and not as talkative.

well today, she brought her glass turtle to school. the little tiny turtle that eric bought for her when he was up here for his interview. she adores this turtle. well, today she decided to take it to school, without us knowing this....

at school she proceeded to show all of the kids. mrs. king asked her to put it away and told her that she "didn't want to see it again..."

well, the turtle made a 2nd appearance. this time getting taken away.

the good, the bad and the ugly. what a bummer of a day. and a bummer after already getting in trouble for talking in class. as a parent, it is so hard watching your kids 'test the waters', as a parent it is so hard watching your kids get into trouble. as a parent, i now think back more than ever to when i was a child and the things i did wrong.

as a child of God i need to look at what i do. i told caelan today. what would Jesus say....
we all need to live in obedience. making sure we make Jesus proud in all we say, and do.

hoping i can teach my child to walk in the ways of the Lord. in the midst of even the little things like this that seem so huge, i pray, Lord, teach me your ways. help me raise my child. give me wisdom. grant me peace. direct my ways so that i may do right by your will.

on the flip side:

caelan did go straight to her room to write her teacher a letter.... i was pleased with that!
furthermore,
the kids are adjusting. making friends. loving our church, school, and neighborhood. they love our big backyard and have enjoyed the friendships we have made thus far.
their rooms are mostly all done and the house has just a handful of boxes left to sort.
little by little, day by day life is getting settled.
some days are easier than others, but overall we love living here, just missing family and friends.

tonight we begin our small group at church. we are excited, yet at the same time filled with anxiety. hoping it is a good fit for us. we went to a welcome bbq last week and was introduced to 4 groups that were offering us into their group, we chose this one particular group and hope we made a good choice. all of the people seem so amazing at the bbq, it was tough to choose!

we'll keep you posted with how it goes. :)

please keep us in your prayers.

*caelan, at school. - testing the waters -
*riley as we are STILL figuring out a program that fits her needs
*eric at work for continued success
*and me at home- being the wife and mom God calls me to be
conversation between caelan and her teacher:

background: caelan is "friendly. there isn't a gal in the class she hasn't made friends with yet." ---the teacher has emailed to us....

(caelan talking in class): <----- caelans version of the story. she always comes home with the truth of what has gone on at school. and offers the information to us upon entering the door.

mrs. king: "Caelan, can you please stop talking?"

Caelan: "yes. mrs king." (in a quiet utter)

(caelan begins to talk again, the 2nd time)

mrs. king: "caelan, do i need to move your seat or do you think you can handle it?"

Caelan: "i can handle it"

(caelan didn't talk again....)

the NEW reality

hopefully i can organize my thoughts enough to make sense, but bear with me, there is a lot going on in my mind and i, myself, am trying to make sense of it all. :)

it all hits at once. the emotion overcomes.
the reality has set in. we live in Idaho. 1400 miles away from everything we are used to.

each day goes by and there seems to be a little more to set it all in, the fact that we do live here. each day i think i have realized it totally, but then the next day comes and goes and it is a whole new reality the next day.

each day is a new reality, bu
t what makes things extra out of the ordinary today is the fact that my house only consists of riley, lucy, our dog and myself.

life moved on today. life has now shifted to work schedules and school schedules. and if you ask me if caelan rode the bus, my response would be no. i needed to take her today, just today. i needed to learn and see our new reality. her school. meet her teacher for the first time. see some of the classmates that she will spend all day every day with.

it was neat going to her school, taking her teacher a small gift for our appreciation in committing to teaching our child this year. it was doubly awesome getting there really early so we could enjoy Starbucks coffee and donuts give to everyone from the PTA. (so nice since it was 46 degrees outside) <---- yeah not the 68 that was mentioned for CA this morning. :) lol.

i often asked myself, when will it truly sink in that we live here. this isn't some long extended vacation. i thought, once our stuff got here from the moving company, the 3rd day we were here. nope. didn't happen that day. i then thought, once we came back from our California visit, nope, although it did become a little more real. but the day was today. since now life moved forward. caelan is officially in school here. meeting new friends, learning new things. furthermore, eric started his first official day today as well. (pix to the school is his new high school campus) he was at work all last week, but today was the 1st day he will have students. and i know the reality it setting in more than ever for him as his stomach turned with a great deal of anxiety this morning. a new school. new students. new staff. a whole new route to work.

somewhat of a starting over. a fresh perspective. and yes, days are exciting and new adventures can be fun. but they are sometimes hard. and yes, there have been a fair share of hard days. but, what is so amazing and glorious is that we can take each stride knowing we are right where God wants us. all four of us, and lucy too!

taking it in stride. one day at a time.
praising him for his greatness in all He is
doing....

the first grade teachers for caelan's school are.....

Mrs. Shamberg

Mrs. Lambert

Mrs. Evans

and caelans teacher is......Mrs. King
---------------------------------->
conversation with caelan:

(driving down the road. there is a burger king on my left hand side. fast food chains frequently advertise using blow up type figures on top of the roofs of these places.... cartoon characters, or what ever....)

so this particular day, we saw 'sponge bob'.... not our favorite in this house. i actually don't allow the show in our house and i am not sponge bobs biggest fan. the girls know this and make regular comments about this fact....

so, on top of the burger king, they had been advertising sponge bob, a huge sponge bob on the roof top of my also, least favorite fast food restaurant.

CAELAN: "mom, you don't like sponge bob. he's not very nice huh? and he doesn't say nice things. but how come other kids like him?"

me: "that is OK if other kids like him but in our house mommy and daddy don't want him because that is our choice. there are other characters that we like instead and that is OK too."

..................the conversation was dropped...........................

[the next day Eric and the girls and i drive by the same burger king, but this time the action figure blow up doll has fallen over.]

CAELAN: "oh my gosh mom, sponge bob is dead! look mom sponge bob died!"

{ we were all cracking up. the perspective of a six year old.}

sent to me from lonna a long time ago. but had come across it and wanted to share...

not sure who's story this is but it is so touching....

JUST LOOK AT THE PICTURE A GOOD WHILE, AND THEN READ THE REST. IT WILL TOUCH YOU.

"I was privileged to take a photo of "Five Generations of
Women"
shortly before my 93 year-old Grandmother passed away last year. The photo, shown below, features the hands of my Grandmother, Mom, Sister, Niece and Great-Niece. While I can't take credit for the idea, I was so happy to have had the suggestion & capture this moment. It inspired a friend of mine to do something similar which turned out so beautiful and a special keepsake prior to her father's passing. "

Grandma's Hands

GRANDMA'S HANDS A must read thru to the end
please!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Grandma, some ninety plus years, sat feebly on the patio bench.
She didn't move, just sat with her head down staring at her hands.

When I sat down beside her she didn't acknowledge my presence and the
longer I sat I wondered if she was OK.

Finally, not really wanting to disturb her but wanting to check on her
at the same time, I asked her if she was OK. She raised her head and
looked at me and smiled. "Yes, I'm fine, thank you for asking," she
said in a clear voice strong.

"I didn't mean to disturb you, grandma, but you were just sitting here
staring at your hands and I wanted to make sure you were OK," I
explained to her.

"Have you ever looked at your hands," she asked. "I mean really
looked at your hands?"

I slowly opened my hands and stared down at them. I turned them
over, palms up and then palms down. No, I guess I had never really looked at
my hands as I tried to figure out the point she was making..

Grandma smiled and related this story:

"Stop and think for a moment about the hands you have, how they have
served you well throughout your years. These hands, though wrinkled
shriveled and weak have been the tools I have used all my life to
reach out and grab and embrace life.

"They braced and caught my fall when as a toddler I crashed upon the
floor.

They put food in my mouth and clothes on my back. As a child, my
mother taught me to fold them in prayer. They tied my shoes and pulled
on my boots. They held my husband and wiped my tears when he went off
to war.

"They have been dirty, scraped and raw , swollen and bent. They were
uneasy and clumsy when I tried to hold my newborn son. Decorated
with my wedding band they showed the world that I was married and loved someone
special.

They wrote my letters to him and trembled and shook
when I buried my parents and spouse.

"They have held my children and grandchildren, consoled neighbors, and
shook in fists of anger when I didn't understand.

They have covered my face, combed my hair, and washed and cleansed the
rest of my body. They have been sticky and wet, bent and broken, dried
and raw. And to this day when not much of anything else of me works
real well these hands hold me up, lay me down, and again continue to
fold in prayer.

"These hands are the mark of where I've been and the ruggedness of life.

But more importantly it will be these hands that God will reach out
and take when he leads me home. And with my hands He will lift me to
His side and there I will use these hands to touch the face of
Christ."

I will never look at my hands the same again. But I remember God
reached out and took my grandma's hands and led her home.

When my hands are hurt or sore or when I
stroke the face of my children and husband I think of grandma. I know she has been stroked and caressed and held by the hands of God.

I, too, want to touch the face of God and feel His hands upon my
face.

When you receive this, say a prayer for the person who sent it to
you, and watch God's answer to prayer work in your life. Let's continue
praying for one another.

Passing this on to anyone you consider a friend will bless you both.

Passing this on to one not yet considered a friend is something
Christ would do.

i came across this email. and it is such a neat reminder... something to read over and over. i loved it so i thought i would share it with you too!

To My Child

Just for this morning, I am going to smile when I see your face and laugh when I feel like crying.

Just for this morning, I will let you
choose what you want to wear, and smile and say how perfect it is.

Just for this morning, I am going to step over the laundry, and pick you up and take you to the park to play.

Just for this morning, I will leave the dishes in the sink, and let you teach me how to put that puzzle of yours together.

Just for this afternoon, I will unplug the telephone and keep the computer off, and sit with you in the backyard and blow bubbles.

Just for this afternoon, I will not yell once, not even a tiny grumble when you scream and whine for the ice cream truck, and I will buy you one if he comes by.

Just for this afternoon, I won't worry about what you are
going to be when you grow up, or second guess every decision I have made where you are concerned.

Just for this afternoon, I will let you help me bake cookies, and I won't stand over you trying to fix them.

Just for this afternoon, I will take us to McDonald's and buy us both a Happy Meal so you can have both toys.

Just for this evening, I will hold you in my arms and tell you a story about how you were born and how much I love you.

Just for this evening, I will let you splash in the tub and not get angry.

Just for this evening, I will let you stay up late while we sit on the porch and count all the stars.

Just for this evening, I will snuggle beside you for hours, and miss my favorite TV shows.

Just for this evening when I run my finger through your hair as you pray, I will simply be grateful that God has given me the greatest gift ever given.

And when I kiss you good night I will hold you a little tighter, a little longer. It is then, that I will thank God for you, and ask him for nothing, except one more day...

been a while....

but, here i sit. having a thousand words come to mind and not being able to type fast enough to get it all on.... or being able to organize my thoughts in such a way that would make sense and translate into the minds of those that will read this...

Here we are resting in God's will. Resting in the path that He has created for our lives.

I can tell you in all honesty that doing His will doesn't come easy. I have known Jesus as my Lord and Savior for a lifetime, but in the last 10 years i have really sought who He is and who He is in my life. In the last 3 months I feel i have met Him in a more real way because for once, sadly, i have to say for once we allowed Him to take control. We have done things our way for so long, and struggled immensely. Hitting bumps in the road, and yes, everyone hits their own bumps in the road, but I am certain we hit more than we needed to by always taking the detour route, coming back to what God wants versus seeking that first and foremost.

Doing what God's will is, makes life tricky, and it isn't always easy and especially when uprooting our family to another state, county, city, town, or what have you. But in so many aspects it makes life less complicated. we don't have to wonder if we are resting in His will, or doing what we feel is right, because we know with all honesty we are where He wants us to be. so when i have a tough day, missing family or friends, or what ever it might be, i am surrendering to Him. "lifting my eyes to the hills, where does my help come from, it comes from the maker of heaven and earth..."

When we surrender to Him, we have to constantly be in surrender to Him, each and every step of the way. and for once, i find myself constantly having to surrender and what better place then surrendering to Him. It fills my heart with great peace and comfort that i find myself talking to Him more, praying aloud. singing worship songs to Him in and new and different way, as though those songs are truly my prayer versus this really cool song that i have learned over time that has maybe has lost its true depth through memorization.... but, really thinking of the words, and putting more meaning into my worship time. Life is different for us without so many distractions.

Life is so calm here. I have realized that I don't do chaos. the hustle and bustle. some thrive on the constant, and the go-go-go, but i have learned that all of that caused stress in my household because i internalize too much.... i am learning to let things go more. taking a day at a time....

calming my life has calmed my spirit. it has allowed me this tremendous opportunity to hear God, speaking to my heart.

I have often thought about this move, how can i not think about it when it is starring me in the face each and every day i wake up.... and i always remember back to that letter. the letter offering Eric a job up here that gave him a tremendous career opportunity! and every day it is such a blessing to me that he got this opportunity.

we feel so blessed to be here. so blessed to be on this path called life and being on it with Gods grace and mercy is astounding.

things have fallen into place so well. a home. schools. of course Eric's job. and now a church home. we loved the service at "real life ministries" (click on the link to learn more) this past week. such an amazing time of worship too.
i couldn't help it, but when i left the service and walked to the car, i wept. in a good way. those good ol' happy tears people talk about.

don't get me wrong, our church home at yorba linda friends was amazing. and i miss worshiping there so very much. and it is a struggle every day to have left that church, but because God called us here, we, for obvious reasons needed to find a new church home that would be "that fit" for us. and it is. so to have another piece fall into place was comforting to me, to us.

so little by little it all makes sense. and life is moving forward. and God is doing amazing things.
thank you for your prayers. your encouragement.
we are grateful!

enjoying journeying with Him
with my family,

Dichotomy is my war song today...

It has begun. Unannounced. Unheralded.

Have you ever woken up early? Early enough to see the sun rise. That first moment, when Helios' rays are visible through the fog-laden sky, but the warmth has yet to reach you; that moment in time also comes unannounced. You woke up to see it. You are expecting it. You may even know what to expect. However, that does not in any way diminish the awe which overwhelms us at that moment. The spiritual sense of renewal that invigorates us, shakes us to our core; at once banishing our preconceived notions founded upon past beliefs, and offering comfort with the innate knowledge that all is well.

It is with this dichotomous feeling (fear and security, unsettling ignorance and comforting familiarity) that I meandered through my day of meetings, introductions, explanations, and cursory glances from other newly hired employees. At times it felt like something out of a dream: snippets of familiar reality interspersed with new, terrifying backdrops, traveling with friendly strangers who seem at times, well, too friendly. For me, there is always that nagging sense of isolationism when surrounded by people too willing to befriend you with little foreknowledge, too willing to find diminutive areas of commonality through which to divulge to you their life story, too desperate, it seems, to have allies in this "war" to complete full character analyses of those who at random chose a seat within earshot.
I am sure that, by now, I must sound at best antisocial and at worst, a stuck up snob. That is not my intention. Rather, the opposite is true. In honesty, while I can attempt to initiate casual conversation with those around me, smile and make eye contact, mildly laugh to show that I am in good humour, my heart is pounding wildly and thoughts of insecurity and doubt cloud my vision, making it impossible to clearly visualize a way of escape.

I do believe that God, and God alone, has brought me (and my family) here, for an ethereal purpose that only He knows. This singular fact drives me to initiate conversations, to seek out those uber-menschen who intimidate those around them with their attractive fashion and stunning good looks, while my knees buckle and my feet threaten to walk out of their own accord...

Yet.

Today was a success. Like the morning sun in its consistency and intensity, Life has opened a new chapter for my family and me. Although I was anticipating today, and was checking my blackberry calendar hourly for the past week to make sure that I accidentally didn't miss today, the vitality and comfort which cradled me today was beyond measure. Moments of inadequacy were met with consistent and resounding support from veteran staff within the Post Falls School District, while thoughts of regret were soundly beaten back with consistent revelations of the incredible situation God has led me to. Today, my dichotomy of spirit was met with all the weapons in the armory of the Lord my Savior.

Ephesians 6:10-19 The armory of the Lord. What a powerful, impressive image this is. The Holy Lord. Almighty. Omnipotent. The Lord God has an armory. Weapons which he freely gives to those who call for mercy and grace. The Breastplate of Righteousness. The Helmet of Salvation. The Sword of the Spirit. Gird your Loins with Truth. Cover your Feet with the Gospel of Peace. The Shield of Faith.

v. 18 With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints.

Our burden has felt heavy many times throughout this transition period. My faith and knowledge of the spiritual war that exists on this temporal globe can only offer one explanation for this: dark, brooding clouds are not brought by the Father of Lights, but rather Applyon (Rev. 9:11), the Ruler of Darkness (Eph. 6:12), the Accuser (Rev. 12:10), the Ruler of this World (John 14:30). As the Psalmist states: "He will call upon Me and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him, and honor him" (Ps. 91:15).

Although there is much more to say, and my mind is reeling with words, phrases, and visualizations that I would love to share, it is with heavy eyes that I struggle to finish this post, and so, must leave more for later installments.

Thank you all for your prayers, support, and love during these past weeks and months of our transition....

in Him,
-e
